Autonomous vehicles, more commonly known as self-driving cars, can sense and navigate their surrounding environment with little to no human intervention. These vehicles rely on a combination of technologies, including radar, GPS, and a range of AI and machine learning algorithms, such as image recognition. These algorithms learn from real-world driving, traffic and map data to make extremely precise decisions about when to brake, turn and accelerate, how to stay in the correct lane and how to avoid unexpected obstructions, including pedestrians. Although the technology has advanced considerably in recent years, the final goal of an autonomous vehicle that can fully replace a human driver has yet to be achieved.
